Wat heeft intellectueel eigendom te maken met Online Veiligheid?

The Internet has become a place where we share and make our work public. Anyone who tries to copy or "borrow" your work via the Internet without permission is profiting from your hard work – your intellectual property – without any credit to you.

Technology has advanced to a state where previous copyright codes and laws no longer fit. Just as you need to be aware of faceless Internet users profiting from your work, it is imperative that you become responsible for your own Internet habits and actions that could get you into trouble.

Piraterij: A term used to describe when electronic and audio-visual media such as music, movies, and software undergo unauthorized reproduction and distribution, particularly for commercial gains.

Peer- to-Peer (P2P) File Sharing: The process of making files available to other users over the Internet for downloading purposes. P2P Services are software and online services that allow files to be shared among users.

Wat Je Moet Doen
Many people differ on the definition of piracy when it comes to files for download on the Internet. While some see it as an obvious infringement of copyright law, others believe ownership is more complex. The best solution is to be informed and aware of the laws in your country and respect them as best you can. In some parts of the world copyright laws are nonexistent or not enforced.

And as for plagiarism, while the Internet provides easy access to research and information, every time a phrase, thought or paragraph is borrowed, it is imperative to credit the original author.

Ik wil een copyright op mijn werk, maar ik wil wel mijn eigen voorwaarden stellen. Wat zijn mijn opties?

TIG member, Alberto, has written a short story called Popo the Mouse – A Deleterious Tale. Fun, fictional, and fantastical, his story is available online to download but is also for sale through the web. To protect his work, Alberto has attached a Creative Commons license to his story. We asked him why he chose to license his work in this way.

TIG: Hoe heb je vernomen van Creative Commons?
I learnt about Creative Commons at a seminar on IP, copyright and the arts during my MA (at Goldsmiths College University of London) as one of those involved in the Creative Commons was an alumni of the University.

TIG: Waarom heb je je werk gelicenseerd via hen?
I was looking for something that would balance copyright with the opportunity to gain outreach for the story I wrote. Not being an actual writer or someone who has ever been published, and neither a famous cooks husband turned writer, it's a hard challenge to find a just balance between wanting to get your work out there and having some rights over your intellectual property. Creative Commons provides this balance as both a network and a framework where "some rights are reserved".

TIG: Creative Commons offers many variations of licenses. How did you figure out what was right for you?
Ik koos voor een licentie die het iedereen mogelijk maakt om te publiceren en om mijn werk te gebruiken op hun site, publicaties etc. gratis bij de enige voorwaarde van de kennisgeving van mij (ik zou niet willen dat het zich ergens ben ik niet geassocieerd met comfortabele), het herkennen van mijn auteurschap en dat het gebruik is niet-commercieel. In alle andere gevallen wordt een overeenkomst / contract nodig zou zijn. Ik vond dit de perfecte balans tussen het reserveren van bepaalde rechten (met name voor commerciële toepassingen of met een zeggen als ik het niet eens zijn met het gebruik) en op het zelfde moment konden de mensen zich vrij aandeel het verhaal of het bevalt.
